Guide to Cleaning & Preserving Your Wedding Dress

If you purchased your perfect wedding gown only to have to postpone your wedding this year, you aren’t alone.

If you’re re-selling your dress, then dress preservation is the ideal option. You’ll keep the dress in pristine condition for resale! Thousands of dresses have been thrown into closets and are in jeopardy of damage - not to mention causing serious stress when you open the closet and walk in to see it sad and alone! Emotions aside, improper storage can cause yellowing, mildew, unsightly marks, tarnished beading, and stains. Preserve your dress quickly to prevent irreversible damage so that when we get through this pandemic era, you can reschedule your wedding and it will be as stunning as the day you first tried it on.

In many cases, wedding dress fragility is directly proportional to price. Prone to staining, yellowing, and tarnishing, along with mold and mildew in the wrong environment, you may end up with a time-consuming and costly mess on your hands - and in the worst case, a hunt for a second dress.

Even if it’s only been a few weeks and you’re hoping to reschedule for the spring, a few months sitting in storage can lead to mildew and staining. Hangers may leave strange indents and marks in the shoulder region, and the hanging may cause embellishments to pull the fabric. These little details are all reasons to set a preservation plan today to make sure your dress looks good as new on your wedding day!

If you want to keep your dress as-is after the wedding, you’ll also need to budget its preservation. Post-wedding, cleaning and preserving your wedding dress ranges from $300 to $350, see our options here.

In a pandemic pre-wedding scenario, you can skip the cleaning since you haven’t worn your dress and opt for just a preservation bag or box which ranges from $100 to $150.

The space in which you store your wedding dress should be cool, airy, and dark. Sunlight causes yellowing, while humidity creates a breeding ground for mildews and molds. A preservation bag or box creates a barrier against these climatic destroyers, but you’ll still need to keep the dress in its bag or box in an appropriate area.

In order to avoid those disastrous stains, creases, and mildew, you need the right storage. Even just a couple of months in a closet can put your dress at risk! Your options are a storage box or a storage bag.

If your wedding is in the next couple of months and you have an arid closet, a Museum Quality Preservation Bag is a great choice. The other option is the Museum Quality Preservation Box. It creates an even stronger barrier against contaminants and other harmful conditions. It is sealed with acid-free tissue paper to prevent oxidation, another factor in yellowing dresses. This is the best long term solution, and ideal if you’re not going to be taking your dress out for more than five years.

If you want to go the extra mile you can order a preservation service for the dress to ensure it stays flawless! This is recommended if you’ve had the dress improperly stored to date and are starting to see signs of damage.

Minimize handling of your dress before the wedding, and whatever handling you can’t avoid should be done with clean hands. Some experts say you should only handle with cotton gloves - something we include in our preservation boxes. Dirt and oils can create stains and other damages on the fabric that may not show for a while. “Invisible” stains can take weeks or months to show, and by the time they appear as a mark on the dress, they’re already well set into the fabric.

A historically challenging year for everyone around the world, the emotional toll is great on many of us who have had to postpone the biggest day of our lives. Once you’re able to move forward, the last things you need to add to your list of complications are avoidable damages to your dress! With these tips, you can keep your dress in its original gorgeous condition.
